Information and guidance for patients with endocrine diseases and diabetes:
Two types of vaccines against corona are available in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Pfizer) and (AstraZeneca), and the Moderna vaccine has recently been approved, and it is expected that more vaccines will be approved by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority.
Diabetes and a number of endocrine disorders, including adrenal insufficiency and diabetes insipidus, have been classified as health conditions that warrant prompt use of vaccines.
The Saudi Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism has not proven information about any specific side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine for people who suffer from endocrine diseases or diabetes, so we recommend taking the Covid-19 vaccine.
In general, most vaccines that have been developed have potential side effects. But those who have concerns about the Covid-19 vaccine can view the pages of the Saudi Ministry of Health website or contact the ministry by calling 937 to answer its various questions if there are any.
If you have specific questions about your health condition, do not hesitate to contact your primary doctor
        ● Can COVID-19 vaccines cause bad side effect?
Some individuals may have allergic reaction to the vaccine. If you have been offered the COVID-19 vaccine and are sick, it is recommended that you reschedule your vaccination appointment until you have recovered to avoid complications. You can learn more about reactions to vaccines on the Saudi Ministry of Health website.
        ● Are people with diabetes and adrenal insufficiency at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19?
Yes, many studies have proven that diabetics are more vulnerable than others to severe infections and serious complications of Covid 19 disease. Therefore, the Saudi Endocrine and Metabolic Society recommends taking the vaccine as soon as possible due to the fact that it helps prevent infection and reduce the severity of the disease if it occurs, Allah willing.
People with adrenal insufficiency are not at increased risk of adverse reactions from vaccines, but if you feel unwell after the vaccination, double your hydrocortisone treatment as you normally would on days of severe illness as directed by your doctor. We also advise patients with adrenal insufficiency to pay attention to the amount of medicine available to them (hydrocortisone) and to ensure the availability of appropriate quantities.
The Saudi Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism advises patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and patients with adrenal insufficiency, to get the COVID-19 vaccine quickly, as they are at risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
It is also important to review the latest advice announced by the Ministry of Health from time to time, by looking at the Ministry’s accounts in social media, as well as you can check the Ministry of Health website for more details about the different types of the Covid-19 vaccine and follow up on updates.
